RV trailer brakes should be adjusted depending on how often you travel and the severity of downward slope that you encounter while driving. If you do not travel often, a general rule is that RV trailer brakes should be adjusted at least once a year.
For RVers with average mechanical experience, adjusting trailer brakes on your own may be easy, but if you doubt your skill-level or find you’re more comfortable having your brakes adjusted by a professional, Gilbert RV Insurance suggests you let an experienced mechanic do the work.
When adjusting your brakes, you or your mechanic will access the star wheel by removing a small rubber plug on the bottom of the brake backing plate. Once removed, the star wheel will be accessible. The wheel will be tightened until the brake locks and the wheel will no longer spin. Once this is done, the star wheel will be loosened a few turns so that the wheel turns freely without slowing or dragging.
Preventative maintenance and frequent checks on important systems such as your brakes will keep you safe on the road. For extra peace of mind, choose Gilbert RV Insurance for your trailer, and travel confidently no matter what.
