RV Overnight Parking at Rest Areas

Each state has its own rules and regulations for overnight parking. Some consider overnight parking to be the same as overnight camping, while others are more lax on the policy.

One state that is particularly confusing is Utah. A highway patrol agency stated that overnight parking at rest areas is prohibited; however the Department of Transportation stated that there is no specific law prohibiting it. If you choose to park in Utah, it’s important to remember these rules: No slides out. Do not bring anything outside your RV. Do not unhitch your trailer. Remember you may be asked to leave after a few hours. Truckers take precedence over RVers by law at rest stops.

California has its own set of rules for RVers. When parking in California, you must park in a designated spot, and stay for no longer than 8 hours during any 24 hour period. Do not pitch a tent or park your RV at a rest area and leave it unattended to do an extended-time activity, like hiking, camping or hunting.

In Texas, camping at rest areas is prohibited; however, RVers are welcome to park overnight provided that the RV does not restrict access to roadways or sidewalks. RVers will be treated the same as truckers, and slides should be used discretionally.

Check back for updates on more state rules and regulations for overnight camping and parking.
