Planning Ahead for Fall Foliage

The annual turning of the leaves marks the visual turning point between fall and summer that autumn’s enthusiasts wait for all year long. Starting in September and dwindling by November, the process is a quick one that speeds by and is worth some planning ahead of time to catch the peak of beauty in the transition.

Our RV Travel Guide recommends some favorite eastern areas to consider when planning your RV trip for a foliage fix!

New Fawn, Georgia

Between Trenton and LaFayette, Cloudland Canyon State Park in New Fawn, Georgia has 72+ camping and RV sites with a spectacular backdrop of fall foliage that blankets the canyon and surrounding forests in rich, warm tones as the weather cools.

For an added adventure on a comfortable fall day, this park also offers geocaching – a modern GPS game where people leave items for others to find in remote areas. What better way to explore changing tree lines!

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is a terrific town to plan a trip to during leaf season. The mountainous areas of the Blue Ridge Parkway offer truly lovely vantage points from which to enjoy leaf peeping while on the move. For the more adventurous, you can have an exhilarating autumn experience zip lining through the colorful canopies!

Because there is also a booming food culture in this mountain city, you can wrap up your leaf tour with warm apple cider or spiced cuisine featured at locally owned restaurants during the harvest season!

Greater Boston, Massachusetts

The Minuteman Trail of the Greater Boston/Greater Merrimack Valley offers a two hour foliage drive in a state seeped in history and old world charm. You’ll find the foliage reaches its peak between the beginning and middle of October, assuming no late-season storms come through to blow the leaves away prematurely!

This area of the northeast has welcoming family farms and apple orchards to enjoy while getting your foliage fix. Stop in with the kids for all the pie, pumpkins, and beautiful autumnal memories!

Northwestern Vermont

The great state of Vermont is distinguished among New England states as having the most designated scenic highways on which to have your breath taken away by utterly stunning fall foliage with the added bonus of no billboards to interrupt the view!

Much of the state is still rural with major paved cities few and far between, presenting visitors with millions of trees among which to chase leaf season’s peak. The northwest corner of the state is the most undeveloped and RV travel though this area between October 5th and 20th will give you an amazing experience!

Remember, wherever in the country you wish to visit this fall, planning ahead can help you determine the foliage tour of your dreams. We love this season on the eastern seaboard and hope you make the most of it!
